"Fortunately, even though it's a relatively new exotic fruit in the US and Mexico, demand is increasing in these countries as the market gets to know the jackfruit's properties," said Gerardo Gutierrez, Business Developer at Cabello Group.
This company started cultivating jackfruit 15 years ago in Nayarit and 8 years ago in the state of Chiapas, which makes it a relatively recent product in the Central American country. Currently, they are the only ones producing jackfruit in the south of the country and soon they'll be the first to have Global GAP certification for their orchards and packing facilities in Mexico.
Even though Asia is the largest producer of this fruit, so far they haven't been a real rival for the company, said Gutierrez. This is because Cabello focus on the domestic market (between one and 15% of production) and ship the rest of its production to the United States.
