Peru: Pomegranate exports up more than 28% in value in 2016

According to AgrodataPeru, in 2016, Peruvian exports of pomegranate amounted to US $40,279,391, i.e. 28.3% more than the US $31,394,995 achieved in 2015. In terms of volume, the country exported 18,414,730 kilos of pomegranates in 2016, that is 23.3% more than the 14,941,988 kilos it shipped in 2015.

The main target market for this Peruvian fruit was the Netherlands, which acquired such fruit for US $ 18,931,313, i.e. 47% of the total. It was followed by Russia with 13%; the UK with 12%; the US with 7%; Canada with 4%; the United Arab Emirates with 4%; Saudi Arabia with 2%; and other destinations with 9%.

The main exporting companies were Exportadora Fruticola del Sur with shipments for US $12.3 million (30.5% of the total), Agro Victoria with 9.1%; Agricola Los Medanos, 6.9%; Consoscio de Productores de Frutas, 6.8%; Corporacion Agrolatina, 6.2%; Agricola Pampa Baja, 6%; Inversiones Nivama, 4.4%; Agroinversiones Valle y Pampa Peru, 3.2%; Agroindustrias AIB, 3.1%; Agricultural La Venta, 2.7%; and others, 21.2%.

Shipments grew by 1,180% in seven years
The Association of Producers of Pomegranates from Peru (Progranada) said that Peruvian pomegranate exports went from 1,438,000 kilos in 2010 to 18,414,730 kilos in 2016, which means they increased by 1,180% in that period. 

The association said that in 2010 there were twelve destination markets, including the Netherlands, Russia, UK, Canada, USA, France, Italy and Spain, among others. By last year, this number had doubled, as the country is also exporting pomegranates to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Portugal, among other places.
