Spain: Brazilian limes fill gap in domestic production

In Spain, limes are a seasonal product, but they are increasingly demanded all year round. That is why companies such as Mengis Export SL have considered importing them from Brazil, one of the largest producers of this fruit. "For now, we haven't seen a great increase of consumption, since it is a fruit that is mostly demanded when the weather is good," explains Eugenia Menéndez, manager at Mengis Export. Nevertheless, this Valencia-based company expects the trend to be given a boost in a matter of weeks and months.

This year, Mengis Export has imported about 23,000 kg so far, and it expects to increase imports, depending on the market's needs and on how the campaign develops in Spain. Its main customers are wholesalers, who can buy 4.5 kg boxes for € 7.50; a price that does not differ too much from that achieved at this time last year, affirms Menéndez.

Although Brazil is a major lime producer, "it is not a direct competitor for the Spanish market because they produce during our off-season," says Menéndez.
