Italy: Artichokes from Puglia will only be available in April

"The season of artichokes from Battipaglia is about to start. Volumes are still limited, but larger quantities are expected from Sicily. It is still early for produce from Puglia, and last week's frost didn't help. Artichokes from Puglia will only become available in early April," reports Giuseppe Ventura from La Zucca Rossa di Ventura, operating at the Centro Agro Alimentare di Napoli (CAAN).

The company stand a CAAN.

"The colour of Sicilian artichokes is not perfect, thus favouring those from Tunisia and Egypt. The flavour of the Italian produce is indeed exceptional, but appearance always plays its part. To develop the perfect flavour, artichokes need cold weather, but temperatures don't drop below 20°C in Tunisia and Egypt during cultivation."

La Zucca Rossa prefers working with Italian artichokes, especially those from Puglia. "They are the most popular thanks to their flavour and high-quality. We only buy from abroad when we need produce to sell, it's what we did during the first two months of 2017, but broccoli and artichokes from Puglia have no competition. When we sell artichokes from this region, we sell three or four times the quantities."

Current prices depend on variety and origin. "Purple artichokes from Sicily with a good quality vary between €0.20-0.25 per head. Sicilian Roman ones reach €0.40-0.50 and those from Battipaglia sell at €0.60-0.65/head. Tunisian artichokes sell at €0.35 and those from Egypt at €0.30."

Pumpkins
"Italian pumpkins will cease to be available around 15th-20th March. Then we will have to wait for produce from Scafati, which will become available around 20th June. There are limited quantities of Portuguese produce but quality is not exceptional. There is no produce from Tunisia, the best after the Italian one. The first volumes from Argentina will arrive around 7th-8th April."
