All “okay” with the imported mango market

Things are looking okay for the imported mango market currently. “The supplies are a little bit slow at the moment and I’m hearing about people having issues around staining and scarring on the skin,” says Carlos Villa of Rio Rico, Ariz.-based Higueral Produce. “That’s what I hear on the market.”

With supply, Villa says the majority of mangoes are currently coming in from Mexico as well as a bit of fruit from South America, specifically Peru.

Meanwhile demand is also satisfactory for now. “Demand is fine—but the thing is there are a lot of Ataulfo mangoes out there right now and they’re moving slowly,” he says. “They’re not like the round mangoes. Everyone consumes varieties like Tommys or Kents but Ataulfos are another market. They’re more of interest to the Asian, Latin American and Mexican markets.”

Pricing also okay
Pricing seems to be equally steady for mangoes. “Tommys are around $6.50 and mangoes from Peru are around the same price,” says Villa. Meanwhile Ataulfos go anywhere between $5-$10 depending on size. “Ataulfos are $10s on the 12s, $9 on the 14s, $8 of the 16s, $7-7:50 on the 18s, $6 on the 20s, $5.50 on 22s, $5 on 24.”

That said, pricing has seen a slight bump so far in 2017. “While pricing has been steady it’s a little bit higher than last year,” says Villa. “Then there was more product around. But for now, I think mangoes are going to stay on these prices.”
