Francisco Huergo Maurin, the Secretary of Rural and Agricultural Development (Sedrua) for the government of Michoacan, stated that Michoacan was Mexico's second biggest producer of broccoli with a cultivated area of 2,384 hectares and a production of 50 thousand tons.
Maurin also said that Michoacan was one of the states with the highest potential in the fruit and vegetable sector because of its product variety and diverse production.
The aforementioned data can be found in the 2016 food atlas published by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA).
Tangancicuaro is the municipality that has the biggest production area and produces the most broccoli in Michoacan. This municipality produces 28,905 tons of broccoli and has 410 hectares devoted to this crop.
Tangancicuaro is followed by Purepero, with 4,329 tons and 222 hectares, and Zamora, with 4,219 tons and 151 hectares.
