Lettuce shortage boosts demand for Spanish endives

"The campaign is going very well because, given the shortage of lettuce, which is a complementary food, the demand for endives has increased significantly," affirms Carlos Menchaca, head of the export department of the Navarre company, Endinava. To this we must add that now is the best time of the year for this vegetable, since it is newly planted, and because "many people go on a diet early in the year, boosting the demand for this product," says Menchaca.

According to Menchaca, "the demand is estimated to be 15% higher than last year, with its price being 30% higher." Moreover, the harvest of roots has also been very good, which will make it possible to guarantee a sufficient stock throughout the year.

As for its prospects outside Spain, Endinava focuses on non-producing countries that are far from the most important growers, like France and the Netherlands. They consequently ship their products to Portugal and Morocco. As for Italy, it is a market in which they have to compete with France, since the distance and logistics costs are practically the same for both.
