Indian companies focus on Russia
An Indian company supplies white and red onions to the these markets. The onions are dried, sorted and packaged in different formats, like 2 kg bags and 10 kg bags. Within the domestic market, prices for onions are around 7 rupees (€0,10) per kg, which is slightly below average. He said that they expect in the season of 2016/2017 volumes for onions will increase. Grapes and potatoes will be soon available in the Russian market too.
While Egypt is on the rise as a competitor, this Indian exporter isn’t really worried. “Onions are a commodity. If there isn’t much volume on the market, prices will always be high. As the onion sector is quite large, clients usually demand more than just good quality. Companies that focus on good service, like a consistent delivery will always find clients.”
In this season, the company is going to start with grapes and potatoes geared towards the Russian market. The company is also working on improving its own production capacity. “We’re trying to increase the sizes that are produced by our growers. We’re also setting up a new packhouse.”
The company is also looking for new markets in the Far East. They have already shipped 5 containers of jumbo black grapes to Chinese destinations like Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing.
