Overview of container shipping companies based on market share and alliances
The bankruptcy of Hanjin shook up the maritime sector. One of the largest shipping companies will remain in the port indefinitely. Within the maritime sector, three large shipping companies combined own the lion’s share of the sector. Maersk has a market share of almost 16 per cent. Mediterranean Shg Co has just over 14 per cent, and CMA CM has a little over 10 per cent, according to website Alphaliner.
Shipping companies are working together to offer their services in alliances increasingly often. Within the container shipping industry, there are three large alliances: 2M, Ocean Alliance and The Alliance. The first has a market share of 35 per cent, the second has 26 per cent. Some way behind is The Alliance with 17 per cent of the market.
