Coco Wilson, the first and only Nam-Hom green coconut imported by Spain

Bright future beckons for fresh coconut water

It is called Coco Wilson and comes directly from Thailand. It is a fresh green coconut of the "Nam-Hom" variety ("aromatic water" in Thai), and is considered the best in the world because of its sweet and floral flavour. It contains pure and raw coconut water, whose packaging is the semi peeled coconut itself, shaped into a diamond. Each fresh coconut contains between 30-50 cl of refreshing coconut water and up to 150 grams of delicious green coconut pulp.

The company was founded by two partners who started to market this product only two and a half years ago, becoming the first and only Spanish importer of young green coconuts of this unique aromatic variety.

Fran Gómez and Alfonso López-Rodó, the partners of Coco Wilson, explain the process.

"The coconuts are harvested in the traditional manner in coconut plantations located in a small area of Thailand and are cut manually with a machete to give them the shape of a diamond. They are then shipped under a controlled temperature and in modified atmosphere packaging to the headquarters of the company in Barcelona."

In addition to being a delicious, natural and healthy drink, coconut water is a natural isotonic drink, and the perfect ingredient and container for cocktails, smoothies, salads, soups and desserts. COCO WILSON has its own cocktail menu prepared by world cocktail champions and collaborates with premium spirits brands.

"For now, we have clients in wholesale markets and distributors in Spain, as well as in restaurants and luxury hotel chains. This year we are starting to open lines of work with supermarket chains, with whom we want to continue increasing our volumes at a European level," explains Fran Gómez.

They also export to France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Monaco, Portugal and the United Kingdom, especially in the spring and summer months, when the consumption of coconut water is higher. "We want to reach an agreement with wholesalers in northern Europe; it is a very receptive market for this product," he affirms.

According to Fran Gómez, coconut water has been one of the fastest growing food products in recent years, both for its taste and for its beneficial health properties, as it is the natural drink that helps the most when recovering from sport activities. "We believe it is a product that has come to stay. It has been difficult for it to break through, but it also has a lot of potential. Avocados needed a few years to gain a foothold in the market and they are now one of the most popular fruits."

Coco Wilson is also sold to individual consumers as, via the website www.cocoshop.eu , any user can buy the product and have it delivered at home within 24 hours. "It is not an expensive product if we compare it with other imported exotic fruits, such as papayas or mangoes."

"We have invested in a colourful branding that consumers really like, and this has had a positive impact on sales." We also offer three types of tools to drill and open the coconuts in an easy and safe manner and make it possible to drink and eat the fruit's delicious content.

This year, due to the great demand they have had from producers and from the beverage industry, they have also started to import fresh coconut water packaged and frozen without processing. For this, they only need to carry out a nanofiltration of the water of their coconuts, 100% of which are of the "Nam-Hom" variety and certified organic by the EU, and then fill bags in an aseptic manner, which are then frozen and shipped to Europe.

They are also planning to launch COCO WILSON in PET bottles before May, and they claim this will be the purest and most natural coconut water in the European market, receiving only an HPP treatment after being bottled in Spain, giving it a shelf life of up to 60 days.
