Colombia wants Hass avocados to become the country's fourth export product

According to Julian Londoño Londoño, director of the Research Center La Selva, Corpoica, they are working on a project with 11 entities in the sector to "create a real technical change in the Hass avocado crop's production and post harvest to increase its competitiveness and to comply with the requirements of the markets, especially for exports."

Londoño Londoño said the results, knowledge and technologies generated and validated in this area of the country could be implemented in other regions dedicated to the production of Hass avocados.

Export numbers
According to Analdex, in 2016 Hass avocado exports increased by 228% in volume, reaching 18,201 tons worth US $35.04 million. The country exports Hass avocado to the Netherlands (41.6%), the United Kingdom (27.1%), and Spain (20.3%). 

The sector's main goal is achieving health admissibility to export fresh avocados to the US market, a project that is in its final stretch.
