Hans Steltenpool, Dutch Carrot Group:

“Good carrot sales in Western Europe, but Eastern bloc fails to show up”

“The carrot market is currently struggling with mediocre demand. And that has actually been the case for a few months already. The mood is not too good at the moment as regards prices, which are below cost price for the farmers,” says seller Hans Steltenpool form the Dutch Carrot Group. Whether the carrot market will improve? “You can never know, and it is mostly dependent on the weather. If we have a good spring, it will be all right. Quality has been fair up till now, that will not be the problem.”

Jan Daniels, Hans Steltenpool, Gerrie Stroeve, Matthijs Sels and Hans Knook during the Fruit Logistica in Berlin.

“Consumption in Western Europe is not the problem. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, the carrot is promoted properly, and it fits the healthy lifestyle also promoted on television, but Eastern Europe is failing to show up, and we are gradually starting to be in need of those sales. Usually the fair in Berlin has a bit of an effect on the market, but that was not the case this year. The carrot market could definitely use Russia to get rid of the carrots.”
