Changes in European market for fresh produce

The fruit industry is rapidly changing – especially in Europe. The change sees concentrated demand from the supermarkets and less spot sales, reduced volumes and smaller margins, major social and ecological responsibility and also a reduction of waste, according to Macari Fruit Services.

Representing an improvement for the exporters and especially the growers, the current market brings a challenge to the companies relying on the old paradigm.

The aforementioned changes in the market bring new opportunities and challenges, with trends that are becoming increasingly interesting for both the present and the future. This, added to a strong competition from other international markets, the climatic influences on dates, crop, availability, and the adverse exchange rates for the Euro, have helped the company understand how to face the future in these interesting times.

"Six years ago, we wanted to help and represent growers and exporters in Europe, with our experience of attending claims in Europe and our technical knowledge to reduce the losses related to quality, transport problems, insurance, legal advice, commercial and market problems," Macari stated in a press release.

"Our services will include; sourcing of exotic fruits, representing of exporters and growers in accessing the European market, and last but not least, we will take care of logistics, providing a service for importers, which will facilitate the moving and safe arrival of the goods to the targeted markets."

"Also, we are working with Dutch waste management partners to achieve a reduction of waste by, amongst other things, using composting and gas production techniques."

Macari Fruit Services already has suppliers in Africa, South America, and parts of Europe and plan to supply directly to Asian, Latin American, Canadian, Russian, Middle Eastern and Australian markets in the future.
