Risks on the garlic market abound

China: Garlic prices to trend downwards in 2017

The outlook for the garlic market in 2017 is gloomy. Sales of garlic for cold storage have run into difficulties, and transactions between the production plants and the marketplace have not improved over the years. Supply exceeds demand. The prices for garlic are currently in steep decline. What impact will this have on the price for garlic in 2017?

1. A drop in garlic exports
Given the decline in garlic exports, the expansion of garlic plantations and the difficulty in placing the current garlic reserves (and many other elements) there is a possibility that the prices will still continue to fall in the coming period.

2. Bumper harvest for garlic is a certainty
Taking into account the recent weather and climate conditions and the expectation that temperatures will continue to gradually rise, which will benefit the garlic crops, and, as long as no extreme natural disasters occur, this year's bumper harvest is a certainty.

3. Growth of garlic cultivation areas exceeds 25%
Under the influence of the high garlic prices in 2016, production facilities in the provinces Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Yunnan have enthusiastically expanded. The growth of areas used to grow garlic in the whole country is higher than 25%. The fresh garlic from Yunnan that will enter the market between March and April will be one step ahead in shocking the domestic garlic market.
