Aubergine prices have fallen significantly since start of season
While enormous shortages of Spanish aubergines were still a topic of conversation a few weeks ago, this problem seems to have been solved by now. There is uncertainty about volumes and supply from Spain. Belgian aubergines are currently also on the market. “Prices are lower than expected,” says Jurgen Franco from Jabbeke. He supplies his products to the BelOrta auction.
Good start
The first Flandria aubergines of size 225 were supplied to BelOrta by producers Heulens from Vremde and Topa from Jabbeke on 3 February, and were bought for €5.62 per kilogram. “We started with very good prices, but these quickly dropped. By now, we are still around 1 - 1.10 euro, but this is much too low for the time of year. We are still only at the beginning of the season, we should be getting about 1.50 euro or more. It is an odd situation, because it is not as if there is a lot of volume on the market. The situation is fairly unclear at the moment, we are hearing various things.”
“As regards volumes, these were slightly smaller for a while, and aubergines did not grow very large in the greenhouses either, due to the cold and dark weather. This week has seen an improvement with more sunshine. On 16 February, aubergines were already larger.”
