Corne van de Klundert (OFD): “Scarcity now, but significant volumes on the way”

Indian grapes on European market from late November

Indian grapes are currently being well-absorbed by the market. “But the situation could change in the coming months. A significant volume is on the way to Europe. Those amounts are considerably higher than last year, so it could become quite exciting in coming months,” Corne van de Klundert from Origin Fruit Direct explains. Prices for white grapes are at a level of 13-14 euro a punnet and 11 to 12 euro for a 4.5 kilogram pack.

The importer received the first Indian grapes in late November. “For the third season in a row we received the first grapes from a specifically early area. It concerns a few containers, but it is interesting for us because that period can experience scarcity on the grape market,” Corne continues. “We have been supplying the regular programmes from Nashik since the first week of February. At first volumes were a bit disappointing because the sugar development was delayed due to the cold, but volumes are now starting to improve.”

The South African grapes are currently still dominating the market. “Furthermore, Chilean grapes will be on the market early this year. Because of the disappointing market in the US, more will be sent this way,” Corne says. For the time being, Indian grapes arriving in Europe are mostly old and familiar strains, but according to the importer, much is also dedicated to experimenting with new strains. “That is also the case for our parent company Mahindra, which is in talks with agriculturalists. I cannot rule out that we will also start seeing red grapes from India on the market in coming years, in addition to the white and blue strains.”
