Cauliflower prices back to normal

The bad weather of recent weeks disrupted the balance between supply and demand for vegetables, causing prices to increase; however, Daniel Blázquez, of Silvana Fruits, states that, "demand and prices are now going back to normal, because when such peaks are reached, people stop consuming."

Although cauliflowers withstand the cold well, frosts have taken a toll on the production volume, and to this we must add that the quality has also been affected.

According to Blázquez, "in smaller sizes, the difference in quality is not as noticeable; however, in calibres 6 and 8, which is what we cultivate, it is always riskier."

For this company based in La Rioja, it is easier to keep an eye on the French market, since the product they have and the calibres they produce are similar to those of the United Kingdom and France. Moreover, since they export more than 80% of their production to this area (France and the United Kingdom), when there is a production shortage, "it makes more sense to look more at the data provided by those markets," says Blázquez. The United Kingdom and Italy are also countries where part of their production is shipped and, at the moment, they are entering the UAE market.
