Elena Rogojnikova, Hagé International:

“South African avocado harvest starts earlier”

The prices for Greenskin avocados from Israel are currently at a fairly high level. “This is being caused by the weather circumstances in Israel. Prices will remain stable for the next two weeks, but from week 9 volumes from Israel will start decreasing, which could result in further increasing prices,” Elena Rogojnikova from Hagé International expects.

“The harvest from avocados from South Africa will start earlier this year. Most avocados are expected in Europe around week 10. Volumes will be a bit low, which is why prices will remain a bit high for now,” Elena continues. “Many Hass avocados were sent to Europe from Chile at the start of the season. Compared to last year, we currently have much less Chilean fruit on the market. Last year there was plenty of supply until March. There is plenty of supply from Spain, with an emphasis on small sizes (20-22-24).”

“South Africa will only have sufficient volume of Hass avocados from April. Peru will also have early Hass in April. Peru expects 10 to 20 per cent more production in the coming season, but the new sales markets in Asia (which focus on smaller sizes) will also give higher returns compared to Europe. South Africa is also expecting ten per cent more volume compared to 2016, but the 2016 volume was smaller due to the hail at the start of the season last year, which damaged the fruit at an early stage. Kenya starts its season in March, with a higher production than in 2016,” Elena concludes.
