Italy: Good year for potatoes but not for onions

Matteo Freddi, from Freddi Prodotti Ortofrutticoli, reports that "the potato market is going very well, also because consumers are replacing products that are unavailable (due to the bad weather) with potatoes."

"Our company has always worked with potatoes, so we are definitely experienced. This year, we are pleased with the very good prices. In particular, the Colomba variety - which has big grades and a good appearance - is very popular. It is grown in the Verona area."

Onions are not doing so well, even though there is the hope that the situation will improve thanks to the lower temperatures of the past few days.

"The market hasn't been very lively so far and stocks are still abundant not only in Italy, but also in Germany and France. Both red and golden onions paid the price of a slow market."

White onions are doing a little better. "Borettana onions experienced a couple of difficult months in November and December, but they recovered in January."

Freddi focuses on organoleptic qualities and on its capability of getting consumers aware of its corporate choices. "Our Borettana onions have an incredible history. The first document reporting the cultivation of these onions dates back to 1426. If we managed to convey the history behind the cultivation of these onions, consumers would recognise their value."

Freddi commercialises around 3,000 tons of potatoes, 2,000 tons of Borettana onions and 1,000 tons of onions every year.
