"It is difficult to expand the business with production shortages"

This is the case for sambo artichokes, which are produced and distributed by Frutas y Hortalizas Mas Serrano SL. It is a type of artichoke that is planted from seed and characterised by the fact that its tips do not become spoiled. These innovations in the variety have caused the product to become more expensive, with prices that will continue to rise until March. That is when France, its main competitor, starts its campaign and prices will stabilise.

"We have been working with this variety for 4 or 5 years," states Francisco José Mas, commercial manager at Frutas y Hortalizas Mas Serrano. Although one of the main goals of any company is to expand and export to the greatest number of countries, this time it is complicated due to high demand and low production. The product accounts for 30% of the company's total sales and is mainly shipped to supermarkets for sale to final consumers.
