According to information provided by the Chilean Walnut Commission, weather conditions in recent months have been favorable for this fruit.
"During winter, the crops accumulated enough cold hours. Then, the weather conditions were good in spring, as there were no frosts, which allowed the crops to have a good flowering and fruit set. The fruit has developed smoothly in recent weeks," the Commission stated in a press release.
Currently Chile has about 44,000 hectares of walnut trees planted, 60% of which are fully productive.
As a result, the industry projects it will harvest around 90,000 tons of walnuts in the a 2017 harvest, a figure they expect to double within the next 5 years.
