Catania's Moro orange production down 60% this year

The bad weather in Italy in recent weeks has taken a toll on the fruit and vegetable production in general, but especially on Moro oranges. In this regard, Salvino Sparacino, manager of NovaBiofruit, states that "this year, there is a clear drop in the productin. In the Catania area, the campaign has come to an end due to the damages caused by bad weather." And this is not the only area in Italy that has been affected. In La Rivera, the production is 20% lower than in previous years.

NovoBiofruit has been marketing Moro oranges since 2006. These are pigmented oranges that they export to the rest of Europe. Specifically, 90% is marketed overseas, leaving the remaining 10% for local businesses. At present, according to Sparacino, "our main competitor is Spain, not only for oranges, but for all products in general; however, we do not think they are better than us. Our product is of higher quality, as it has better organoleptic characteristics."

Moro oranges account for 20% of NovaBiofruit's total sales and, at the same time, are the second best-selling pigmented variety in the country.
