Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers celebrate 50 years

The founding of Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers was a turning point for the sector in Ontario. On February 21, 1967, an overwhelming 83.2% of ballots cast through a grower plebiscite favored forming the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers.

In 1967, OGVG represented 765 producers across Ontario, covering approximately 350 acres. Today, OGVG has over 200 growers, representing more than 2800 acres. According to Statistics Canada, farmgate value of Ontario greenhouse commodities represented by OGVG has grown from $6.7 million CAD in 1967 to over $820 million CAD in 2015.

OGVG is responsible for licensing all growers, packers and marketers of Ontario greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

OGVG works hard to promote and connect its growers with government agencies, consumers, retailers and food service operators across North America. This is done through government relations, research, marketing, trade show attendance and community activities. OGVG supports the Ontario greenhouse vegetable sector and its growers to ensure success for today, sustainability for tomorrow, and fresh, nutritious, quality produce for all!

OGVG has launched a new logo, honoring the anniversary and will celebrate this milestone at the CPMA convention (Toronto), PMA (New Orleans) and a local event in Leamington, ON.
