"Quality is good, but there are grade problems due to the warm temperatures in October, November and early December. Then the rain, hail and frost further reduced the percentage of produce available and its quality."
According to D'Agati, the weather led to early ripening but, at the same time, some areas are experiencing a delay. Also due to the lack of volumes, the season will mostly end in late March, while it usually continues until late April.
"Of course we are trying to supply all our clients by reducing the quantities sent to them. Prices initially skyrocketed, as they doubled and even tripled compared to last year. Currently, average quotations hover between €0.90 and €1."
Demand is not decreasing. "For those, like us, who managed to maintain high quality standards, demand did not drop, especially from retailers and a few domestic markets. This year, however, we will not be able to export produce abroad."
The future
"Our produce is organic and we are working to activate all necessary procedures. This will probably push us towards new horizons."
