Peru establishes phytosanitary requirements for French cherry seeds

The Peruvian Government has established phytosanitary requirements to import cherry seeds (Prunus mahaleb) of French origin and provenance through the Directorial Resolution No. 0002-2017-Minagri-SENASA-DSV.

The standard, which was published yesterday in the official newspaper "El Peruano", states that all shipment of cherry seeds must have the phytosanitary import permit issued by the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) obtained by the importer or interested party, before certification and shipment in the country of origin or provenance.

In addition, the shipment must be accompanied by an official phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin, showing that the material comes from mother plants which were officially inspected by the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) during their last growth stage and and were analyzed in a lab and are free from: Pseudomonassyringae pv. syringae, Cherry leaf roll virus, Plum pox virus, Prune dwarf virus, Raspberry ringspot virus, Strawberry beatt ringspot virus, Moniliniafructigena and Eurytoma amygdali.

Before being shipped, the seed must be immersed in a 0.15% solution of lambda cyhalothrin, or any other product of equivalent action, for 2 minutes.

The seeds should be free of pulp, soil, or plant material. In addition they will be contained in new packages that haven't been used, free of any foreign product material, and labeled with the products identification and country of origin.

The importer must have a valid importers registration and production sites and technicians responsible for post-entry quarantine products. They must also undergo phytosanitary inspection at the point of entry.

An inspector from Senasa will take a sample of the product and send it to the Diagnostic Center of Plant Protection to rule out the presence of pests contained in the additional statement. Importers will pay the cost of diagnosis.

The post-entry quarantine process will last for twelve months. In the quarantine period, Senasa will inspect the material installed in the production site four times and at the end there will be a final mandatory inspection to lift the post-entry quarantine.
