"Considerable expansion of Belgian red pepper acreage"

The exact figures have not been published yet, but the first data on the acreage of Belgian vegetable greenhouses have been received by LAVA. What is most noteworthy this year is the relatively big expansion of red peppers, even though the exact extent of this is still unknown. Belgium, compared to the Netherlands, has a lot less peppers in greenhouses, but these are recording a growing trend.

Red peppers, up 10 to 15%
Last year, there were increases in cucumbers and courgettes, while the acreage devoted to peppers and aubergines remained unchanged. "Once again, we see an increase in cucumbers. Last year, this was particularly the case for BelOrta, now part of REO Veiling. For courgettes there is still no clear data available. For aubergines, no changes have been reported, just like last season. Red peppers are recording a considerable expansion in terms of acreage, up by 10 to 15%. The other colours remain stable."

Growing number of specialties
When it comes to tomatoes, the share of specialties has been increasing for several years. "For traditional loose tomatoes, the situation remains practically the same, but there is a slight increase when it comes to individual specialty tomatoes. As for tomatoes on the vine, the total acreage also remains fairly stable, but we see a slight increase of specialties at the expense of the traditional ones."
