Although supply had been somewhat limited due to rain in California, organic clementines are currently being harvested despite small interruptions. “The rain should be clearing out this week which should put us right back on track,” said Craig Morris, Citrus Category Director for Homegrown Organic Farms. He estimates full production to begin again shortly. The company's season starts off with tango clementines and in three or four weeks they’ll move into the W. Murcott variety, ending mid-April. Fruit is distributed throughout North America under the Homegrown Organic Farms brand.
Anticipating a strong season
Prices have started extremely strong and 2016 was a record year. “We finished up one of our best years with organic clementines last month and right now we’re in our normal varietal gap. Our new crop is just starting and we anticipate a very strong season. We’re very excited,” Morris said.
Rising demand for organic citrus
Customers appear to be moving from conventional fruit buying towards organic. Morris says the demand is a rising trend, which they’re happy to be a part of. “We’ve noticed there seems to be more and more crossover from conventional into the organic spectrum. Health and wellness seems to be playing into our favor.”
In addition to the clementines, Homegrown Organic Farms is also shipping organic lemons, cara cara oranges, limes, pommelos, navels, and grapefruit. “We’re having an incredible season in terms of fruit condition and eating quality. It’s a wonderful time to promote California organic citrus.”
