Albert Heijn and Lidl grow, Aldi loses market share

The market share of discounter Aldi decreased further in 2016, while Albert Heijn and Lidl, on the other hand, continued to grow, market researcher Nielsen announced on Monday. Aldi and the shop formulas of Detailresult (Dirk van den Broek, Dekamarkt) are losing the most ground. Aldi, which still had a market share of 8.9 per cent ten years ago, dropped by more than 0.3 percentage point to seven per cent, with one shop in 2016. Dirk van den Broek and Dekamarkt, two chains of Detailresult, both lost 0.1 percentage point.

Albert Heijn has increased its market share from 35 to 35.2 per cent, and Lidl’s market share grew from 10 to 10.3 per cent. The Jumbo supermarkets are growing to 18.4 per cent market share because the final C1000 shops were reconstructed. That is 0.1 percentage point lower than the combined market shares a year previously. Coop and Deen both managed to grow one percentage point in market share. That was at the expense of Sligro’s Emté, MCD and Attent - the formula Spar Holding will discontinue.
