Mexico to export 20% more avocados to Canada and Japan

The president of the Association of Producers and Exporting Packers Avocado of Michoacán (APEAM), Adrian Iturbide Mejia, said that avocado exports to Canada and Japan would increase by 20 percent in 2017, which means Mexico would be sending more than 10,000 additional tons of avocado to each of these countries. He also said that Mexico had shipped about 52 thousand tons of avocado to them in 2016.

In an interview, the president of the APEAM said China was another potential market for avocados, as sales will increase by more than 4 thousand tons this year and amount to nearly 15,000.

"We are trying to grow in various parts this year, we expect to increase exports by 20 percent to Canada and also by 20 percent to Japan over the previous year, so we will have a double-digit increase. We also see growth in China and that there are markets that are growing. However, nothing compares to the US market, where 8 out of every 10 avocados consumed are from Michoacan."
