Zucchini prices through the roof

“Zucchini supplies are unusually tight,” says Alejandro Toro with Vega Produce. Domestically, zucchini is grown in Florida this time of the year. The state’s production is low due to cold weather. “Last week, it was 50 ⁰F,” mentioned Toro. Mexico, the biggest zucchini supplier to the US market, has been dealing with cold weather as well. “In addition, supplies from Mexico are delayed crossing the border. “Although I don’t know the details, I heard that something happened at the Mexican-US border,” added Toro.

$20 per half bushel
This time of the year, zucchini prices typically average $5 - $8 per half bushel. “Right now, prices are $20 per half bushel,” shared Toro. “Everybody is asking for zucchini, it is just not available.”

Dominican Republic and Honduras
Vega Produce grows and sources zucchini out of the Dominican Republic and Honduras. The growing season of these two countries runs from November to May. Although supplies are good, the zucchini programs are relatively small and supplies aren’t able to make up for shortages out of Mexico and Florida. Each week, Vega Produce ships about 2-5 loads of green zucchini and yellow straight neck squash out of the Dominican Republic and Honduras. “We have fixed-price contracts with our customers and partly sell on the open market,” finished Toro.
