Rosse dell'Etna - shelf-life a key element to work on foreign markets

Rosse dell'Etna was created by Francesco Pappalardo and Claudio Moschetto, respectively son and nephew of Sales Director Pippo Pappalardo, who have relaunched the family business with great enthusiasm and professionalism.

"The Rosse dell'Etna brand was established in 2011 and we are now handling 1,200 cars a year. Thanks to the unique microclimate conditions in Palagonia (Catania), where the cold snow is alternated with warm sunshine, blood oranges find an ideal habitat to develop their characteristics."

The objective is to promote the culture and typical flavour of Sicilian blood oranges in Italy, Europe and the world by also exporting their history and knowledge as regards organoleptic properties. The company produces and sells citrus fruit such as Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello blood oranges, tangerines, red clementines and red "Cot" apricots.

The flagship products are the Tarocco VCR and Moro varieties, which have a deep colour and a shelf-life of at least 15 days. Their good consistency means they are particularly suitable for exports.

Pippo Pappalardo adds: "We also commercialise table grapes, Italia and Red Globe in particular. All production processes are subject to strict quality checks, from harvesting to shipping, to guarantee the best supplies possible."

"Our certifications confirm our perfect monitoring of production, quality management and our compliance with international standards. In addition, we are authorised to self-check produce being exported."

The 2016/17 citrus fruit season
"This is a complex season and we have had to deal with anomalies due to the sudden change in temperatures with snow and frost. As if the Tristeza virus was not enough. Luckily the new cultivars are doing well, both on the domestic market and abroad."

"Over the years, we have strengthened our relationship with European retailers. We export our fruit to France, Germany, Switzerland and northern Europe and our turnover is increasing. We would like the citrus fruit sector to be more aggregated to increase our presence on the international markets from now to 2020."
