Supply looks up for bananas

In Phoenix, Arizona, banana supply is looking up. “The supply is up and we’re probably up about 10 per cent or so in banana supply because of good weather,” says Luigi Baratta of Phoenix’s Grayhawk Produce Sales. Grayhawk sources its bananas from San Francisco-based Del Monte Foods Inc. “And the price has been consistent over the last year so that helps out when you go out to bid out your product. There was an issue with the barges coming around this time last year—they were being held up—but we’re not seeing that this year.”

Welcome time of year for the fruit
So looking ahead, Baratta is hoping banana sales continue to stay strong. “Bananas are a pretty simple commodity—and I think everything looks pretty good for them this year,” he says. “Soon, the schools should increase their banana usage. The federal grant money will run out so they’ll buy more from us directly. We’re going to get into retail here pretty soon so the demand should be high for bananas. It’s a good time of year for bananas.”
