Sjan van Gorsel, Reijnpack:

“Good European demand for chicory”

Chicory sales are currently going very well. “It was still very calm in week 1, it seemed as if everyone was on holiday then. But apparently, everyone came home in week 2, and a rush started, sales have continued to go well since then,” says Sjan van Gorsel from chicory packer, Reijnpack, from Sint Philipsland, the Netherlands. “Auction prices are also fairly stable, at a level between 90 cents and 1 euro.”

“Considering the cold and the low availability of other vegetables, I expect a stable to slightly increasing market. As regards Europe, there is a good demand, with Italy and Germany as the main buyers. Last week, we were somewhat bothered by the French supply on the market, but despite that, demand stayed at a good level,” Van Gorsel continues.

“Quality of the chicory is good, and production is also at a good level around 75 kilograms per box,” Van Gorsel says. Reijnpack harvests and packs chicory directly from the forcing trays to limit handling as much as possible. As regards packaging, there have not been many developments, according to Van Gorsel. “Italy is a true foodtainer market, Germany tends to ask for flowpack.”
