Wal-Mart plans to add about 10,000 retail jobs in the U.S. this year as it opens new stores and expands existing locations, including in California. The world's biggest retailer said Tuesday that its plans will also generate about 24,000 construction jobs. (latimes.com)

UK: Tesco to deliver in an hour
Convibo, the online start up, will be delivering Tesco products within the hour to customers in London. Convibo launched last March and offers same day delivery and deliveries within the hour, with no minimum order size. Convibo currently works with Waitrose, Marks and Spencer and Whole Foods. Lidl to open 3 more N.J. stores: report
Lidl will open three stores in Cumberland County this year and could likely compete with similar discount grocers in South Jersey. The Lidl company has local approvals for stores in Millville, Vineland and Upper Deerfield Township, and construction of the Vineland facility is already underway. The three stores are part of Lidl’s plan to open as many as 150 stores on the East Coast by the end of 2017. (pressofatlanticcity.com)

Brazil’s GPA sees 12.1% growth in Q4 2016 sales
Brazilian retailer and distribution group GPA reported net food sales of BRL 11.7bn (€3.42bn) in Q4 2016 (+12.1% year-on-year) and full year sales of BRL 41.5bn (€12.13bn), up 11.4%. Retail business unit Multivarejo posted a 1.9% growth in net total store sales to BRL 7.48bn in Q4 2016 and a 0.8% growth for 2016 to BRL 26.9bn. Same-store sales recovered, supported by improvement at Extra Hyper: which saw same-store sales growth of around 5%, compared to -2.5% in the first nine months of 2016. (esmmagazine.com)

UK: Waitrose Fresh produce sales escalates

Retailer Casino confident for 2017 as France and Brazil improve
Casino said on Tuesday it was confident it could further increase revenue and profitability this year, thanks to cost savings and improving sales in France and Brazil. Casino also told investors it would deliver on its French profit forecast for 2016 after fourth-quarter sales reflected an improvement in France, its biggest market, on a same-store basis, notably at the Geant hypermarkets and Monoprix stores. In recession-hit Brazil, its second-biggest market by revenue, food retail sales showed signs of robustness, driven by the cash and carry Assai stores and promotional activity at the Extra hypermarkets, Casino said.
