Tonny Hooijmans: “Clear way for Dutch mushrooms because of frost in Poland”
No slump on mushroom market after holidays
Although the mushroom market might have had a bit of a slump in January, after the busy holiday period, this year trade continues to go quite smoothly. “There is a fair demand, and prices are at a regular level around 1.50 euro for white mushrooms, and the special types are also selling well,” says Tonny Hooijmans from Oké Trading from Velddriel, the Netherlands.
An advantage for the Dutch mushrooms is the cold which hit Southern Poland, with temperatures around minus 25 degrees Celsius. “That caused problems for the quality and the volumes, and we in the Netherlands can profit from that. Especially when German discounters start promotional actions, and sell twice as many mushrooms. German trade then comes to us to meet their demand,” Hooijmans continues.
Hooijmans is facing the continuation of the season full of confidence. “All countries are actually doing well. Export to the UK continues to do well despite the Brexit and the pound. Oké Trading trades much on the British market and that is definitely not decreasing. Although I am quite worried about the effects of these political decisions in the long term,” he concludes.
