Cuba: Ciego de Avila expects more than 52,000 tons of tomatoes

Farmers in this province have begun harvesting tomatoes and according to the plantations' vegetative state, production should exceed the 52,000 tons projected for the current campaign, one of the highest volumes ever achieved in Ciego de Avila.

This is particularly relevant as more than 30,000 tons of this harvest will go to industry and replace imports, and other volumes will be used to supply markets and retail outlets.

According to Yusvany Cardenas Benitez, the deputy director of Agriculture in Ciego de Avila, the tomatoes will be processed by the business unit base (UEB) Industrial de Ceballos, the factory of Majagua, the factory of Florence, and 14 mini industries, that are expected to play a greater role in the current campaign, which should last until next April.

Vicente Echemendia Rodriguez, head of several crops at the UEB Majagua, said that the cooperative sector and the farmer sectors from Mamonal, which accounts for 800 of the 2,800 hectares in the province, most of which are in excellent condition, would contribute the most to the harvest.

The most productive organizations include the Orlando Exposito, Evelio Molinet, Alfredo Gutierrez, and Reinaldo Many credit unions and services companies, all of which are in the municipality of Majagua and are recognized for their good yields and fruit quality.

There is concern in the process industry regarding the low level of the river and the delays in the start-up of a conveyor belt, which is essential for the industrial processing of tomatoes.
