Spain: Pineapples shipped by air from Colombia
The air transport of fruit and vegetables from Latin America is a very recent form of export. Its main advantages are the better quality of the products, as they can ripen for longer on the plant, as well as the shorter transit times; however, this form transport has not been implemented in all countries at the same time, nor for all products. Consequently, Verde Nuevo, part of the Olivar-Valgren Group, became the pioneer in shipping Colombian pineapples by air.
The early days were far from easy, since the Colombian flower market is very strong, so the airlines were reluctant to give them an opportunity. Today, Verde Nuevo exports from Colombia not only to Spain, but also to Portugal, Italy and France. Moreover, it is currently in negotiations with Dutch companies, assures Juan Rivas RodrÃguez, manager of Verde Nuevo.
