French leek production decreases by 3%

The 2016-2017 leek harvest saw a 3% decrease, reaching 159,800 tons, representing a 2% decrease compared to the five year average.

Production in the North was affected by crop loss following flooding over the spring and drought at the end of the summer. Production has decreased by 14%. A 16% decrease in harvest has been observed since the start of the season in the South East.

Meanwhile, acreage has decreased in the West but yield has increased. Leek acreage in the West has decreased by 8% but harvest should increase by 4%. In the Centre West, acreage has decreased by 3% and harvest is up 6%.

Agreste says that “Since the start of the season, leek prices have stayed at a stable level, above the prices of the 2015-2016 season and the 2011-2015 period”. In December, the prices were 19% above those recorded in 2015 and 34% above the five year average.
