Mexico: Michoacán is the second biggest producer of cabbage

The state of Michoacan is the second biggest national producer of cabbage, with more than 1,113 hectares devoted to this crop in 17 municipalities.

Francisco Huergo Maurin, the Secretary of Rural and Agricultural Development (Sedrua) of the government of Michoacan, said producers continued to cultivate this crop thanks to the demand for this product in the domestic market and that it had been an important generator of employment and development.

He reiterated that the agricultural and livestock sectors were the pillars that supported the state of Michoacan and that they were the basis for the state's development. He also stressed that the state's average annual cabbage production amounted to 39,675 tons.

Huergo Maurin said that cabbage production took place in the municipalities of Zamora, Ixtlán, Jacona, Purepero, Cojumatlan, Ecuandureo, Chilchota, Tarimbaro, Maravatío, Tangancicuaro, Copandaro, Jiquilpan, Venustiano Carranza , Villamar, Sahuayo, Contepec, and Pajacuaran.

Additionally, he said the municipality of Zamora was the main producer of cabbage in Michoacan as it produced a little more than 7,000 tons per year in 227 hectares.

The official stated that producers could cultivate cabbage throughout the year as there are varieties for each season, such as the Savoy cabbage, beef heart cabbage, brussels sprouts, or Tuscan cabbage, which are plants that generally grow to be 25 to 70 centimeters tall, and that grow best with high temperatures.
