"Mexico: "The change in the US presidency won't affect avocados"

The head of the Ministry of Economic Development, Antonio Soto Sanchez, denied that the change in the US presidency would affect avocado exports to that country.

He said that even if the rules of the Free Trade in North America (NAFTA) were amended, US consumers would still consume that fruit.

He said that the same thing applied to the lemon produced in Michoacan, which has no competition in that country.

"I might say we're facing a risk if we had competitors, but we have no real competition in lemon, berries, strawberry, and avocado," he said.

The official said he expected these products' export levels would remain normal after January 20. He said people should wait until Donald Trump takes office before speculating about duties or any other scenario. Michoacan currently exports more than 700,000 tons of avocados per year.
