Price surge of up to 60%

China: Gannan navel oranges - production down 70%

Compared to the same period last year, the production volume of Gannan navel oranges is down 60% to 70%. The price range at the production grounds per kg has gone up from 3.0 RMB - 3.6 RMB to 4 RMB - 5 RMB. In the later period, the price has moved further upward to 6 RMB - 7 RMB. That means a price surge of 50% to 60%," says Mr. Gu Yuanfei from Mutian Agricultural Development in Shenzhen.

There are two main reasons for the sudden decrease in production and the surge in price. First of all, this a 'small fruit year' for the Gannan region. Secondly, a third of the surface in the Gannan production region has been infected by the citrus greening disease. Citrus greening disease is mainly spread by the woodlouse, so it can be prevented by applying specific medication. But it is very difficult to reach the ideal result, which is one of the biggest obstacles in the citrus cultivation industry."

The headquarters of the company are located in Shenzhen. The company has expanded further in the fruit industry cooperatives of Guilin, Jiangxi and Hunan. The company's main product is the navel orange, with an extra emphasis on the Gannan navel orange. But we have other varieties as well. The business model of our company is that of 'company + cooperative + farmers'. We ourselves own 200 hectares of cultivation ground, as well as 1000 hectares through the cooperative. The sales period of the navel oranges starts every year in October and lasts until July the year after. Different varieties are ripe at different moments, so that ensures that we can supply almost the whole year through."

"Our products are sold under our own brand, registered as 'Mutian Fresh Oranges'. They are available in wholesale, supermarkets, individual retailers and online shops everywhere in China. Compared to other people in the business, the advantage of our industry lies in the supply chain from the production ground. In the past few years, we have already successfully adjusted the supply to a direct cultivation base-to-city centre structure. This creates a core advantage for the production base, the storage and the further processing."
