UK: Discounters offer the least choice in produce category

Spanish greenhouse growers have been adding acreage with organic crops over the last few years. The demand for organic vegetables in the beginning mainly came from Scandinavia. But nowadays Spain is also a key supplier of organic vegetables to countries like Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK.

This is also reflected in the latest data provided by market intelligence service Produce View. They visited a number of British supermarkets this week to analyze their offer of organic greenhouse vegetables.

Cucumbers

Last week, Organic cucumbers from Spain where found at all of the retailers visited. The average price for a Spanish organic cucumber was around £1,-. Waitrose offered cucumbers at £1,35, M&S at 1,30, Co-op at 1,19 and other retailers (Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco) offered them at £1,-. Aldi and Lidl had no organic cucumbers in stock.

Bell peppers

Spanish organic bell peppers (mixed traffic lights) were on the shelves of Sainsbury (£2,- pack), Morrisons (£1,41 pack), Co-op (£1,99 / pack), M&S (£2,- /pack) and Waitrose (£2,09 / pack). Other retailers did not offer any organic traffic light peppers.

Tomatoes on the vine

If you are looking for low priced organic TOV's this week, you'd better visit Sainsbury, where you can find them from Spain at 67 pence per kilo. Morrisons offer Spanish organic TOV's at 71 pence per kilo and M&S and Co-op sell them at £1,-. At waitrose you are paying £1,05 for Spanish organic TOV's.

Stock Keeping Units

ProduceView also analyzed the number of types of peppers and tomatoes to choose from in each supermarket. They also looked at the organic and premium offerings next to the standard stock keeping units. British retailer Tesco was the only one to offer Fairtrade products; they had 1 variety of Fairtrade tomatoes available.



Waitrose has the most available; at this retailer you can choose from 17 types of peppers. The retailer offers two kinds of organic peppers, 1 premium pepper and 16 kinds of standard peppers. At Waitrose you also have 25 kinds of tomatoes to choose from; 16 standard varieties, two organic varieties and 1 premium type tomato.



The least choice is offered by discounters like Aldi and Lidl. Lidl 'only' offers 6 standard pepper varieties to choose from and 11 standard tomatoes. Lidl does not offer any organic or premium product to choose from.

Aldi offers two premium peppers and 3 standard peppers. The discounter also offers 2 premium and 5 standard tomato varieties.
