Aus demand for pre-harvest crop quality prediction increasing
A report presented at the New Zealand Citrus Growers Inc. (NZCGI) conference in September 2016 showed that the crop quality monitoring provided by Delytics helped boost the consumer acceptability of New Zealand navel oranges from 62% to 93% in just one season. The resulting consistently good eating quality has been credited by citrus retailers and marketers for boosting repeat purchases of the fruit, right from the start of the season.
Delytics Managing Director, Mark Loeffen, says crop quality monitoring combined with proprietary data analytic tools allows them to predict the ideal harvest timing for almost any crop. Consumer response can also be predicted pre-harvest when data about fruit property measures and consumer likeability of the same fruit has been collected.
Delytics is currently working with a number of companies and peak bodies for a range of crop varieties including plums, citrus and blueberries.
Mark Loeffen says, “Primary industry businesses are keenly aware that even a small percentage increase in the repeat purchasing of their crops could significantly increase their returns. Being able to predict consumer liking pre-harvest and knowing when to pick to ensure the crop will reach consumers in the best possible eating condition will help improve repeat purchasing, and optimise industry returns.”
