Mexico: Increase in gasoline doubles lime prices

According to the Consumer Federal Protection Agency (Profeco), in the first week of 2017, lime prices increased by up to 100 percent in some stores, as they went from 16.20 pesos to 32.90 pesos per kilo.

This is in sharp contrast to the last week of 2016, in which lime and avocado prices had the biggest drop and cost 8 and 12 pesos less, respectively.

However, this week, retail chains like Wal Mart, Bodega Aurrera, Chedraui and Soriana, were selling them at $32.90, $28.90, $26.90, and $26.80 pesos, respectively. These significant increases are the first effects caused by the increase in gasoline prices.

Meanwhile, avocado prices increased by up to 4 pesos. In December, this fruit was being offered at 44.90 pesos, but starting January prices increased to 48.90 pesos, as was found in the Superama store, in La Noria.

In Soriana Plus, a branch of Las Animas, avocado was being sold in 47 pesos; while the Mega Comercial Mexicana, Plaza San Pedro branch, offered it at 46.80 pesos.
