Uruguay closed the year with 8% more citrus

Citrus production, including oranges, mandarins, lemons, and grapefruit, in 2016 was estimated at 271,000 tons, i.e. 8% or 19,000 tons more than in the previous harvest, according to a survey conducted last November by the Department of Statistics (DIEA) of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).

Orange production stood at 139,100 tons and had a 24% increase, while the remaining species recorded an overall drop.

Tangerine production amounted to 95,095 tons, and had a 7% decline over the previous year. The lemon harvest amounted to 35,688 tons, -1%, while grapefruit production amounted to 1,271 tons, -17%.

38% of the total citrus production (i.e. 103,000 tons) was exported (38%) of citrus exported; and the percentage of exports greatly varies among the different species.

In 2016 the area devoted to citrus amounted to almost 15,000 hectares, and the country had a total of 7 million plants, 6.2 million of which (89%) are in production.
