Mexico: Michoacan contributes almost 10% of mangoes nationally

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) stated that Michoacan, which produced a little less than 10 percent of the country's total mango production between January and October 2016, ranked as the sixth largest producer in the country.

In that period of time, the biggest producer of mango in the country was Guerrero, with 358,235 tons; followed by Sinaloa, with 334,239; Nayarit, with 312,039; Chiapas, 237,530; Oaxaca, 158,847, and Michoacan, with 146,767 tons.

These six entities accounted for 1.5 million tons of the domestic production, i.e. more than 80 percent of the total volume produced in the reference period. The production is complemented by Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Estado de Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatan, and Zacatecas.

According to statistics from the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), the production of this crop between January and October 2016 exceeded the total production obtained in 2015, consolidating Mexico as the fifth biggest producer of mangoes worldwide.

By the tenth month of 2016, mango production increased by 9.6 percent, surpassing the volume achieved in 2015 by 165 thousand tons. The entities that reported the largest annual increases were Colima, with 45.2 percent; Chiapas, with 22.5 percent; Nayarit, with 24.1 percent, and Sinaloa, with 14.2 percent, among others.

From 2014 to 2016 (in the first 10 months of the year), the country's mango production Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) was 10.9 percent, and the average production volume was 1,670,000 tons.

Over the last three years, the entities that have had the biggest production increase have been Colima, Chiapas, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Veracruz.

According to the Agricultural Food Atlas of the SIAP, total production in 2015 amounted to 1,775,507 tons, i.e. 22.3 percent more than in the previous year. Meanwhile, per capita consumption stood at 11.6 kilograms.

Mango cultivation was performed on a reported area of 191 thousand hectares, with a yield of 9.7 tons per hectare and a production value estimated at 5,439,000,000 pesos.

Mango exports in 2015 amounted to 337.9 million dollars, nearly 60 percent more than in the previous year. The main destinations for the Mexican mangoes are the United States, Canada, Russia, Australia, Norway, Spain, France, Italy and the UK.

The mangoes for export are subjected to hydrothermal treatment, which consists of washing in hot water at 40 degrees for 90 minutes, in order to reduce phytosanitary risks and comply with international trade agreements.

The highest production months go from April to August, when producers harvest 80 percent of the domestic production.

According to Sagarpa, mango production increased by 36 percent in three years, going from 1.3 to 1.8 million tons.
