Rainbow Kleinpak starts new year with new sorting location

Rainbow Kleinpak starts the new year at a new sorting location in Middenmeer, the Netherlands. “We did not actually dare to dream this would happen,” says manager Chiel Mostert. “We gave the assignment late in July, and exactly three months ago, the foundation stone was laid. Twins Bouw constructed the new location at an unprecedented speed.”

The new packing station is a considerable step for Rainbow Kleinpak. The Dutch company took over Fresh Prepack two years ago. “The tenancy agreement for the building in Poeldijk expired in 2016. We stopped there mid-September, and deconstructed the sorting machine. It was transported to the province of North Holland in fifty loads,” Chiel says. “It will now be placed in the new packing room in Middenmeer.”

Savings
With customers including nursery De Wieringermeer (40 hectares) and nursery Andijk (nine hectares), the company preferred the new location. “Normally, two lorries drove between North Holland and De Lier throughout the day. Now, an electric tractor drives through the greenhouse and we can easily enter the packing station. This is better for the product, better for the environment, and saves a lot of costs,” Chiel sums up. “All these advantages are quite considerable, but you do need to be able to realise something like this.” That opportunity came along last summer. “We wanted the packing room to be finished before the end of the year. We did not expect this to be doable, but it was. Details are still being finished, and we start rebuilding the sorting machine on 2 January, so that we can be ready be the next bell pepper season.”

Keep up the pace
The packing room has a surface of 5,350 m2, and has been provided with one loading and unloading pit for a single lorry. There is also a loading and unloading pit for six lorries. All of this was built by Twins Bouw, which had to work quickly indeed. A quote was requested mid-July, and the assignment was given two weeks later. On 23 September, the first pile went into the ground, and the packing station was delivered exactly three months later. “Thanks to a good collaboration with Van Der Hoeven Kassenbouw and Rainbow Kleinpak, we were able to realise this,” says Marco van Vianen from Twins Bouw. “Lines were short, which allowed us to switch directly. That, in turn, ensured we could keep up the pace.”
