"Because this is a small year for the pomelo production, there is a reduction of 20% to 30% in the pomelo production region of Pinghe. The overall market operations are stable," says Mr. Wen Mindong, who is CEO of the Lipeng Fruit company in Pinghe.
Exports to Europe on the rise
"We benefit from a growing demand for pomelos on the European market since we have a stable clientele in Europe. So the export volumes of the company have been rising slightly compared to the previous production season. The main varieties for export are red pomelos and white pomelos, with white pomelos taking up about 80% of the total export volume."
Export season ends early
"50% of the honey pomelos are exported to Europe, Russia and Canada. Normally, the export season of honey pomelos starts at the beginning of August. The export season to Europe ends at the end of January. The export season to Russia ends in mid-March. This year is different though, because the production of honey pomelos is reduced. The volumes for export are limited, so the export season to Europe is already nearing its end. The current export price is also a lot higher than before. The harbour we use for exports is that of Xiamen. For exports to Russia, we also make use of transport through Inner Mongoli, a besides sea transport."
