Dates have a somewhat traditional image. They are mainly popular in Arabian countries, where they can even be found on menus daily. Dates also have a healthy image, and are praised by foodies nowadays. It is therefore not surprising that demand for dates is increasing. Joey Deen from Denimpex confirms the increasing attention for dates. “More and more people are discovering the fruit, which is full of nutrients. Take one date, and your hunger is sated.” Denimpex has been importing the dates for years already, in various types, sizes, packaging and of various origins, including the well-known fresh Medjoul dates. “It remains a fairly expensive product, and has not yet outgrown its image as a delicacy. If the industry would anticipate the health trend a bit more, this could possible change,” says Joey.
Currently, Denimpex has American and Israeli dates available. The American dates are a bit juicier, and have a longer shelf life, according to Joey. “They are sorted by hand, which definitely benefits quality. The American dates are much more expensive than the Israeli ones, with prices around 60 euro for a box of five kilograms. The Israeli ones are sorted by machines, and cost between 37 and 39 euro per box, depending on size. We also still receive Mexican dates.” He has noticed that the majority of dates are still being consumed by ethnic minorities. Demand is therefore largest during Ramadan. Important export markets are Germany, Belgium, Italy and France.
