"We can supply Kenyan avocados almost year-round”"

“In Kenya, we have a large production of avocados. Our company is specialized in this product, and we want to increase exports to Europe,” says Samson M. Wakibia from Wintechs Merchants ltd. He indicates that they have their own production schemes and various small scale growers, who are GG certified. The out growers belong to five farmer groups of about 300 producers, with the largest having approximately five hectares and the smallest close to a hectare.

Almost year-round
The growers are located in several parts of Kenya, within three ecological zones, and each zone has producers who supply to Wintechs. We can harvest multiple times per year, and in this way, we manage to export avocados from Kenya almost year-round. The harvesting starts at the end of February and ends in November. Except for July, which marks the transition from 1st to 2 crop, we can supply throughout the ten months of the year."

Vision
Samson M. Wakibia, managing director of Wintechs Merchants ltd, indicates the company was founded in 2005, with a view to supplying fresh fruits and vegetables for export to the then existing horticultural export firms, until 2007 when we ventured into exporting the products ourselves. “We started with exportation of fresh fruits to various buyers in the Middle East, till the year 2012, when the European market became attractive. Up to date, our largest buyers are in the Netherlands, Spain and France. These are the countries where we want to focus and double our sales in the coming years.”
